1.3.5.A.4 Demonstrate kinesthetic awareness of anatomical principles

Rationale:

I have noticed that many students could not engage their core muscles while they are sitting or moving. The core is the center of the body and it is essential for people to balance and stay in a right posture. The core is a complex series of muscles. They are extended to arms and legs. They also protect the spine and surrounding muscles from injury. Also, the core helps the spine to stay upright when they are sitting or standing. It is incorporated in almost every movement of the human body. Research has shown that athletes with higher core stability have a lower risk of injury. (“Functional Movement Screening” accessed February 18th, 2013) I hypothesize that the lack of bodily awareness of the core and low-tone posture that my students exhibit in my dance classes not only rests on these two health issues, but I furthermore attribute poor posture to the slow adoption of e-Textbooks. By bringing students’ awareness to their core I aim to give students strategies for counteracting the various environmental challenges to their body posture.
